Leadership in Early Years & Playwork

Overview

A four day programme developed as part of research undertaken whilst writing the book Qualities of Leadership (Garvey & Lancaster, 2009). This programme considers a range of skills, qualities and attributes needed to be the leader you want to be, in the modern early years, childcare and playwork sector. The four days offer a range of individual, small group, large group and tutor led activities and the materials include video clips, opportunity to practice skills, workbooks, theoretical readers and practical activities etc, to cater for all learning types. It is also expected that by the end of the four days a network will be established to support on-going reflective practice and continuous self-development. The four days cover a range of leadership/management related topics, and throughout links are made to other roles we undertake, and how we can all influence practice regardless of our role and place in the hierarchy. Below is an overview of the topics covered during the four days.

 

Aim of the Training

To raise, maintain and improve the quality of leadership by offering skills and support to those in (or hoping to be in) this role.

 

Objectives

 

· Have an understanding of the role of a leader

· Identify and explore how the associated skills and theory can be transferred to other roles

· To practice and explore key skills required in the leadership role

· Be able to synthesise leadership and management theory with personal experience and practice

· To reflect on current and previous practice, experience and theory to inform leadership/management practice

· Be able to identify some of the problems leaders/managers face, and utilise a range of tools and solutions

· Be part of an open and honest network

 

Programme

 

Day 1 - leadership and management  

· Beginning with a look at what is the difference between leadership and management?

· How do we empowering & motivate individuals (including ourselves)?

· To explore the complexities behind managing change, what are the drivers/restrainers etc?

· An introduction to looking at our/others individual effectiveness.

 

Day 2leadership and mentoring  

· An introduction to the theory, knowledge, skills and understanding of mentoring: as well as an opportunity to begin to develop the role in terms of leadership and management roles.

· To explore the role of a mentor and look at how the skills, knowledge and understanding can support the role of a leader/manager.

· To explore a range of ways including reflection, journaling etc and how these can support own CPD and the development of reflective practice.

 

Day 3 - the leader as a learner

· The opportunity to explore a range of theories behind leadership.

· An investigation into leadership styles & learning styles.

· An opportunity to learn about ourselves and how this can influence practice

 

Day 4 - supporting colleagues, teams and you

· To consider the role of the leader in supporting colleagues, including peer mentoring & peer observation etc.

· To explore own support networks, Self-confidence, Action learning sets, Team building, facilitating meetings

· Reflective practice & Emotional Intelligence
